Color Constellation

Color Constellation is an immersive textile installation created for the inaugural PLAY/GROUND exhibition in 2018. Installed in a room of the former Medina High School in Medina, New York, five stellated fabric forms expand across the space. Each differs in size and color, creating a sequence that visitors encounter by moving between, around, and inside them.

The forms occupy much of the room, leaving narrow paths between their projecting points. Visitors must adjust their movement to pass through the installation and bend to enter an individual form. Inside, stretched spandex surrounds the body with color. The transition from the shared room to each smaller interior makes color a spatial experience rather than something viewed only from a distance.

The palette shifts from warm to cool hues across the room. Silver Mylar on the walls reflects the fabric, extending the colors and star-like forms beyond their physical edges. These reflections make the boundaries of the five structures less distinct as visitors change position.

Each form was assembled from spandex using a serger, which creates seams able to stretch with the fabric. Ropes pull the sewn forms toward the walls and ceiling, producing curved surfaces between their points of attachment. Their final shapes emerge from the interaction of the cut fabric, elastic seams, and tension applied within the room.
