Five-Stack Hyperbola

Five-Stack Hyperbola extends the deployable hyperboloid research into a taller assembly of five connected modules. A blue knitted membrane spans the framework, stretching and changing shape as the structure expands and contracts. Repeating the modules creates a continuous vertical form while allowing the geometry of each section to remain visible.

The project investigates how movement changes when several deployable units are connected. Compression can travel through the stack like an accordion, shifting its height and profile. The knit moves with the framework, making the relationship between textile tension and structural transformation visible across the full height of the piece.

The work builds on Melnyk’s original Deployable Hyperbola. The design and fabrication of that single-module prototype are documented in “Customized Knit Membrane Deployable Hyperboloid Tower,” published in the CDRF 2023 proceedings. link.springer.com
