Fractured Connections

Fractured Connections is a site-specific installation developed during a 2017 residency at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock, New York. The work takes the studio’s windows as its starting points, using their corners to organize a network of red ropes across the room.

Influenced by a drawing by Sol LeWitt that connects the corners of elements on a wall, the installation translates a two-dimensional system of lines into a spatial framework. Ropes extend between the window corners, linking the places where light enters the studio. Triangular pieces of white fabric are suspended within that framework, producing areas of greater and lesser density.

As visitors move through the studio, the overlapping ropes and fabric interrupt views of the windows and surrounding space. Light passes through the installation differently from each position. Fractured Connections makes the existing room visible in a new way: its windows become points of connection, while the fabric gives those connections depth and a changing presence.
