SPARKS

Presented at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto for Nuit Blanche 2016. “Sparks” is inspired by the forms of Islamic patterns found in art and architecture. Taking these 2 dimensional patterns and generating a 3 dimensional form the base structural frame and shape was created. There are 9 individual forms clustered together to create one connected structure. Each module is constructed out of a PVC structure with white spandex fabric stretched over it. The fabric is soft to touch and can stretch and conform to human interaction.

During the day the structure is serene and white in the open plaza, the fabric subtly dances in the wind; meanwhile in contrast, at night a LED light in each module is controlled with a remote controller so that visitors can change the lights as they wish. The resultant is a tactile interactive light structure that engages and encourages play with the structure.
